Legal Jousting: Recommended Broodmare Sires, by Michael Ventura, copyright 2005.

Legal Jousting is by the significant European stallion and Intermediate Chef-De-RaceĀ  Indian Ridge (whose sons are the last real hope for the Tourbillon male line); and from a mare named In Anticipation who was by Sadlers Wells and out of 1988 Acorn (GI) Winner Aptostar, a daughter of Fappiano from a Graustark mare.

With a 2nd dam who was a GI Winning example of crossing Fappiano and Graustark, Legal Jousting should like returns of strong nick between Fappiano’s damsire Dr Fager and Graustark’s full brother His Majesty. The two most readily available examples of this nick are probably the Ruffian (GI) Winner Shared Interest, the dam of Forestry, and Jockey Club Gold Cup (GI) Winner Albert The Great.

With Albert The Great the Dr Fager actually comes through Fappiano, thus a Albert The Great mare bred to Legal Jousting would be 3×4 to Fappiano and 4×5 to the full brothers His Majesty and Graustark through two GIW examples (Aptostar or Albert The Great), of crossing Fappiano with a son of Ribot and Flower Bowl. I would consider this very advantageous.
Legal Jousting’s 2nd dam Aptostar also had a 2/3 cross of Fappiano’s dam Killaloe with The Axe II. These two are also found in the 3rd generation of Metropolitan Mile (GI) winner Honour and Glory.

On a related note, Aptostar’s 2nd dam (AKA Legal Jousting’s 4th dam), was bred on the exact same cross of The Axe II on a Abernant mare as the good grey stallion Al Hattab. Al Hattab is the damsire of Holy Bull, and the sire of Holy Bull was Great Above, who had the sire and dam of Fappiano’s damsire Dr Fager as his grandsire and granddam.

Al Hattab is also the sire of Pass The Tab, whose damsire Ambiorix was bred on same Tourbillon/Lavendula cross to Legal Jousting’s male line ancestor Klairon. Note also that Pass The Tab’s 7th dam was Third Trick, a full sister to 1000 Guinieas winner Winkiepop. This is in the favor of Pass The Tab mares for Legal Jousting as Winkiepop was the 4th dam of Court Martial, and Court Martial’s daughter Discipliner in inbred to 4×4 in Legal Jousting’s sire Indian Ridge.

Both Legal Jousting’s sire Indian Ridge (who had Court Martial in his 4th generation), and his grandsire Ahonoora (who was 4×4 to Court Martial’s daughter Discipliner), love returns of even more Court Martial.

Court Martial being found in the dams of Ahonoora’s GI Producing daughter Zodiac Miss (a mare 5×5 to Court Martial who became the dam of Azeri, who is 6x6x6 Court Martial), Ahonoora’s Irish Classic Winning son Indian Haven (5x6x6 Court Martial), Indian Ridge’s BC Mile Winning daughter Ridgewood Pearl (5x6x6 Court Martial), and Indian Ridge’s BC Mile winning son Domedriver (6x6x7 Court Martial).

A very strong source of Court Martial is Theatrical; whose dam Tree Of Knowledge was 4×4 to him. Theatrical is perhaps the ideal source of Court Martial for Legal Jousting as his sire is Nureyev, a brother of Legal Jousting’s damsire Sadlers Wells who has combined with him in the significant GI Winners El Condor Pasa, Divine Proportions, Whipper, Carry On Katie, and the Chilean Galan Fantasma.

The other best source of Court Martial for Legal Jousting is Northern Dancer’s son Lyphard, who was out of a Court Martial mare. Lyphard and Legal Jousting’s grandsire Ahonoora have combined in the GIs Azeri; Waky Nao; Indian Haven; and Dragon Pearl, the dam of the New Zealand GIW Maguire. Note that in the case of Dragon Pearl the Lyphard came through Monteverdi, who was a brother to Jadina, a daughter of Lyphard’s son Pharly and the dam of Azeri’s sire Jade Hunter.

And yet another excellent source of Court Martial for Legal Jousting is a son of Tudor Melody named Welsh Pageant, who was out of a Court Martial mare. Welsh Pageant was the damsire of a MG3 Winner and GI Placed son of Ahonoora named Inchinor and has also combined with Ahonoora in the tremendous 2004 European Horse of the Year and English Oaks, French Oaks (GI) and BC Filly and Mare Turf (GI) Winner Ouija Board. Welsh Pageant has also combined with Legal Jousting’s damsire Sadlers Wells in a BC Winner, namely BC Turf (GI) Winner Northern Spur.

Another good broodmare sire for Legal Jousting is Darshaan, a justly legendary nick with Sadlers Wells who traces back in the female line to Frizette (13-c), the 3rd dam of Legal Jousting’s male line ancestor Tourbillon. Note also that Darshaan’s dam Delsy was linebred 4×5 to Tourbillon himself and Darshaan’s sire Shirley Heights and Legal Jousting both trace back to the Conduit Mare Valve (1-l) through a daughter of English Derby Winner Blue Peter.

And besides the positive of Darshaan being a very strong nick with Legal Jousting’s damsire Sadlers Wells, there is also the positive of Darshaan’s sire Shirley Heights nicking quite nicely with Legal Jousting’s grandsire Ahonoora in the French Oaks (FR-GI) Winner Latice.

Another source of the Frizette (13-c) female line is Seattle Slew and it’s worth noting that his son AP Indy has My Babu as his 4th dam. Like the previously recommended strain Ambiorix, My Babu is bred on the same Tourbillon/Lavendula cross as Legal Jousting’s male line ancestor Klairon (note that My Babu is found on the damside of Indian Ridge’s Irish Classic Winning son Indian Haven). Also one should look for mares either tracing to or inbred to the Dalmary (5-h) female line as she is the ancestress of both Legal Jousting’s damsire Sadlers Wells and his great-grandsire Lorenzaccio. Thus this 5-h ‘Slipper Family’ would really help tie together the sire and damside of Legal Jousting.

Another good source of Seattle Slew for Legal Jousting is Slew City Slew, who has Ambiorix as his 3rd damsire, and Slew City Slew’s son Evansville Slew, who is linebred 5×5 to Ambiorix. (Note that Ambiorix is also found in Tap On Wood, the damsire of both Indian Ridge’s best racing daughter Ridgewood Pearl and another daughter of his, Native Roots, the dam of recent BC Juvenile (GI) Winner Wilko.)

Caro is the strongest source of Relic, who combined with Legal Jousting’s male line ancestor Klairon 2/2 in the amazing Down Under broodmare Eight Carat. Relic is also found with Klairon through the specific source of him found in Legal Jousting (Ahonoora) in American Horse of the Year Azeri, Champion St (GB-GI) Winning filly Park Express (who became the dam of the JAP-GIW Shinko Forest), the top sprinter Case Law (who was rated 120lb by Timeform), and the South African GIW Suntagonal.

Note that in the case of Park Express and Case Law the Relic came through Match (o/o a Relic mare), and in the case of Azeri the Relic cam through Match’s full brother Reliance.

A source of Relic’s sire War Relic is In Reality, who is an excellent nick with Legal Jousting’s 2nd damsire Fappiano (see Unbridled, Rubiano, and Real Quiet).
